Work Expands

“The point of the vacation exercise is not to pretend that every week is the week before vacation, but to look at the difference between that week and any other week,” I explained.

“That’s good news, because if I worked as hard every week as I do the week before vacation, I would go nuts. It’s bad enough the way it is. Almost makes going on vacation not worth the all the trouble,” Marissa replied.

“So, what is different about that week from any other week,” I asked.

“Well, I have to get more stuff done, so I just do whatever it takes. Some days I work longer, but mostly I prioritize and delegate. And you are right, some things simply become unimportant, so they don’t get done at all.”

“So, you have just learned about Parkinson’s Law. Work expands (or contracts) to the time allotted.”

So, as a manager prior to your vacation, you meet with your staff to delegate and prioritize in an attempt to keep things running smoothly while you’re away.
On a normal day, you’re constantly stepping in to change schedules, resolve issues, and fight the battles that would otherwise distract or derail the progress of your team. Makes your position a valuable asset to your company right?
Then you get back to work (after being reminded that there’s a real world outside of the workplace)to find that everyone’s happy to see you AND that everything has gone smoothly in your absence.
Can they really carry on without you, or is it a credit to your leadership and management skills that they can self manage so well?

Nice Blog /Idea, Here I would like to share my experience. For time management make a time – table for yourself. Yes, a time table for 24 hours X 7 days X 52 weeks of your year. For greater success and effectiveness, you must add more of HV (High Value) activities in each area of your life. HV activities are those which advance you towards your goal. When you add more of HV activities into your day, you will need more time. I guarantee that it will open new chapter in your life and you will move towards success.
